Why do Americans care so much about Ann Romney’s $1,000 blouse, or Hillary Clinton’s $14,500 jacket? At first you might think it’s the stirring of socialism in us all, but really, it’s just remembering that part of America, the ideal, not the country, is a rejection of nobility, inherited wealth and self indulgence, and a veneration of economy and simple living. It’s for that same reason that we love stories like the one of Jeff Bezos, creator of Amazon, and his old, beat up car that he drove, even when he could have afforded any car in the world.
